This post is meant specifically for any music techhies who are into the sound of the samplers of the early to mid 80s.
I've been spending a LOT of time trying to find a VST other than the Waldorf PPG that offers piecewise sample interpolation. Those of you unfamiliar with advanced mathematics, piecewise interpolation in music is when a sample makes steps instead of a linear connection to the next sample point. This results in a lot of aliasing in lower notes, resulting in a sound that was easily harnessed among users of early samplers, particularly the Fairlight CMI's and the Ensoniq Mirage.
Well, after lots of looking and failing to find anything, I made a breakthrough: it's possible to create this sound in Native Instruments Reaktor! It turns out Reaktor has a built-in sampler with multiple interpolation modes, and the "poorest" of these modes is exactly what I need, provided I quadruple the maximum sample rate of the VST. I will definitely keep this in mind, and any other vintage sampler nuts should take advantage as well!
Below is an mp3 showcasing the different interpolation modes of Reaktor applied to the Fairlight Series III's "BrassFall12", a sound Terminator nuts will recognize as the T-1000 theme. It plays the sample in "Excellent" mode, followed by "Good", and finally "Poor".
